Hellen van Meene (The Netherlands, born 1972) was herself barely out of girlhood when she began to photograph adolescent girls whom she knew, or found, in her home town of Alkmaar in the north of Holland. 2020-12-14 Hellen van Meene is a Dutch artist based in Heiloo in the Netherlands. Since the mid-1990s, van Meene has garnered attention for her staged, yet intimate, photographs of adolescent girls and androgynous boys, usually in a small square scale with formal and lighting sensibilities informed by her Dutch predecessors like Johannes Vermeer. Artist Hellen van Meene (Alkmaar, Netherlands, 1972) is known for her (mostly) square photographic portraits of teenage girls. Her work was first exhibited in 1996 and has been shown around the world since then. Her photos are in the collection of many prominent museums, including Guggenheim New Yor When seeing Hellen van Meene’s tender intriguing portraits of adolescent girls, one can hardly confuse her works with anyone else’s.
